Essex have announced the signing of the prolific scoring Indian opener, Gautam Gambhir. The Delhi born 31 year-old, who has made 54 Test appearances for his country, replaces Hamish Rutherford as Essex’s overseas player. Rutherford will return to New Zealand after the Friends Life t20 Finals Day for pre-season training ahead of their domestic and international competitions.
Gambhir is expected to make his Essex debut in the LV= County Championship match with Northamptonshire on Tuesday 20 August for the Colchester Cricket Festival at Castle Park, and will be available for the remaining LV= County Championship and Yorkshire Bank 40 matches of the season.
Gautam Gambhir said “I am delighted to have this chance to make my county cricket debut with Essex. After the IPL ended I was looking to play some competitive cricket and playing for Essex will give me that opportunity. I am thankful to Essex for presenting me with this option and BCCI for allowing me to participate in county cricket. I hope I can make some meaningful contributions to Essex in the ongoing season.”
Commenting on the signing, Essex Head Coach Paul Grayson said “We are delighted with the signing of Gautam Gambhir and we very much welcome him to the Club. Gautam is a player with real pedigree, which has been showcased on the biggest stages in world cricket. He will no doubt bring his experience to the squad during an important stage of the season for us in the LV= County Championship and Yorkshire Bank 40 competition.”
A left-handed batsman with 4,021 runs Test runs to his name @ 44.18 including a highest score of 206, Gambhir plays First-Class cricket for Delhi and led the Kolkata Knight Riders, alongside Essex’s Ryan ten Doeschate, to the IPL title in 2012. He made his Test debut against Australia in 2004 and his latest Test appearance came against England at Nagpur in December 2012.
In ODI’s, he has scored 5,238 runs @ 39.68 while his 141 first-class matches have brought him 11,274 runs @ 51.47 with a highest score of 233 not out.
A talented and correct player with an insatiable appetite for runs, he once scored five hundreds in five consecutive Test matches for India. Gambhir is comfortably able to play with aggression and resolute defence when necessary enjoys the reputation of being one of the most accomplished batsman in world cricket when facing spin.
In 2009, he was the number one batsman in the ICC Test rankings and Virender Sehwag has rated him as the best Indian Test opener since Sunil Gavaskar.
