The Essex CCC website spoke to Andre Nel ahead of his departure to the Indian Premier League.
Essex CCC: You must be very proud to be involved in the first-ever Indian Premier League?
Nel: I’m very, very fortunate that (Mumbai Indians and South Africa fast bowler) Shaun Pollock thought of me. He texted me to say there was a position open and I was privileged to be asked. It would have been good if it was for longer than two weeks but I’ve got my foot in the door now so hopefully I can get a contract for next year.
Essex CCC: Nobody quite knows the future for cricket at the moment but you think there will be another IPL next year?
Nel: It seems like there are plans to fit it into the schedule so, yes, there should be another one next year.
Essex CCC: And playing under (Mumbai Indians Captain) Sachin Tendulkar must also be something to be relished?
Nel: It’s really exciting. I’ve spoken to him a few times - when I’ve played against him - but I’m looking forward to seeing how he prepares for matches, spending some time with him and picking his brain.
Essex CCC: Have you had any battles with Sachin Tendulkar for South Africa before?
Nel: I’ve got him out a couple of times in one-day internationals but it will be nice to be on his side and learn him from. I can’t explain how grateful I am to Shaun Pollock for asking me.
Essex CCC: What has Shaun Pollock told you to expect from the IPL?
Nel: Come and enjoy it as much as possible. Do what I’m best at – bowl quickly and get in people’s faces. But most importantly, enjoy the experience.
Essex CCC: So, another spell with Essex comes towards an end. Have you been impressed by the performances of some of the players in the early period of the season?
Nel: I’ve been very surprised considering Essex has such a young side. They are all very mature for their age, keen to do well and eager to learn – which speaks well for the future. I’ve tried to teach them as much as I know and hopefully that has benefited them. It’s exciting for the Club that this team is doing so well at such a young average age.
Essex CCC: What do you think Essex’s prospects are for the rest of the season?
Nel: If they can keep their confidence up and do the basics right then I think they have a very good chance of getting promotion in the Championship. I will also be very surprised if they don’t win a one-day trophy. They have a good batting side so winning a trophy would be a good, and realistic, achievement.
Essex CCC: After the IPL comes South Africa’s tour of England – are you still hopeful of selection for the South Africa squad?
Nel: I hope so. I feel fit and have bowled well during my time with Essex. I’m eager to return here with South Africa later in the summer and hopefully my stint with Essex will help me achieve that. If not there are other opportunities but I want to come back (with South Africa) and hopefully get a chance to play against Essex, which will be nice (South Africa have a provisional fixture with Essex at Chelmsford during their tour).
