2011

Sunday 28th August 2011 saw the Matchplay Final for the Trevor Bailey Shield being contested between Chelmsford CC and Wanstead & Snaresbrook CC.

Wanstead & Snaresbrook came into game winning the competition in 2009 and 2010. At the toss Chelmsford lost the toss and were put into bowl first by the Wanstead & Snaresbrook Captain.

Prior to the game starting a 1 minute silence was held in memory of the legend that was Trevor Bailey who died earlier this year.

Wanstead & Snaresbrook didn't get off to the best of starts and were reduced to 17 for 1 off 5 overs and having to come off the field due to rain. These soon cleared and the game resumed. At the 10 over mark Wanstead & Snaresbrook CC had reached 42 for 2. From this point the two batsmen became settled and the runs started flowing with them 122 for 2 at the half way point. Wtih 10 overs left in the first innings Wanstead & Snaresbrook added a further 58 runs to the score but with the loss of 2 further wickets. Wanstead & Snaresbrook at the end of the their innings had reached 233 for 6 leaving Chelmsford to chase 234 runs to win the Final.

Chelmsford began there run chase and had reached 34 for no loss of wickets off 10 overs leaving them needing a further 200 runs off 30 overs. At the half way point Chelmsford hadn’t scored as many runs as Wanstead & Snaresbrook had at the same stage but still hadn’t lost a wicket. With 10 overs left on the board Chelmsford required 90 runs of 60 balls and had 8 wickets in hand with Chelmsford on 144 for 2 at the time but unfortunately for Chelmsford the last 10 overs of the match proved to be the match winner for Wanstead & Snaresbrook as Chelmsford lost a further 6 wickets and were short of the total and reached a total of 207 for 8 off their 40 overs.

Congratulations to Wanstead & Snaresbrook who are the 2011 Matchplay Champions for the 3rd year running.
