Essex County Cricket Club Statement on Mervyn Westfield

ECB Media Release

Friday, February 17, 2012

Westfield served with interim suspension from all cricket pending ECB Cricket Discipline Commission hearing.

The ECB Cricket Discipline Commission today announced that the former Essex bowler, Mervyn Westfield, had been served with an interim suspension from all cricket under the ECB's jurisdiction.

The interim suspension was imposed by the Chairman of the ECB's Cricket Discipline Commission, Gerard Elias, QC, pending a disciplinary panel hearing, to be held in due course, relating to an alleged breach of ECB Directives regarding Betting, Match-Fixing and Forecasting during the 2009 season.

Earlier today, Westfield was sentenced to 4 months in jail after admitting a charge of corruptly accepting or obtaining, or agreeing to accept or obtain, corrupt payments.

Essex County Cricket Club Statement on Mervyn Westfield

This is a very sad day for all at the Club. It is going to take a while for us to fully digest the comments of the judge, but as the ECB Cricket Discipline Committee has served Mervyn Westfield with an interim suspension as a result of his sentencing earlier today, the Club is unable to comment on any aspect of this case.
