Bryce McGain reflects on his first day for Essex.

Jul 29 2010

Bryce McGain spoke to the Essex Cricket website after taking 4 wickets on debut on the first day of the County Championship clash with Kent at Canterbury.

Bryce, you must have been satisfied with four wickets on your day for the county.

“It was a pleasure to get onto the field because I’ve been looking forward to this day for about a month now since I knew I was coming over but I had to wait for awaiting visas etcetera. So I’ve had my mind around this day and performing well straight away and it was nice to get that first wicket for the boys.

“In fact, I was really excited about it and to go on and get four wickets on my first day for the team was very satisfying. Hopefully, there will be bigger and better things to come.

The pitch looks a good one for batting

“Yes, it’s a good one for batters, it’s slow and the batsman were able to rock onto the back foot as soon as the ball was half short and it was hard work for the bowlers.

You accounted for the two highest scorers of the day in Martin van Jaarsveld and Geraint Jones who put on 176 for the fourth wicket.

“It was good to see the back of the partnership between van Jaarseveld and Jones because that could have really blossomed into something enormous. Credit to our guys because I was impressed with the way that they stuck in there but we worked really hard as a team and probably got our reward with a couple of late wickets.

So a rest-up this evening and then back to work in the morning?

“Yes, now we’ve got to put in a big stint in the morning and we’ll really push hard to wrap up the remaining wickets and try and get the maximum bowling points before we settle in for as long as we can with the bat.

You sent down 30 of the 96 overs bowled in the day, it’s a heavy workload but one I imagine you are delighted to shoulder?

“Yes it’s fine because but I want to get plenty of overs in. I'm loving being here and I genuinely want to play a big part for Essex and help them achieve well over the remainder of the season.”
