Name: Ant Sharp
Role: Sports Science and Medicine Manager/Head of Strength and Conditioning
Ant is now in his 3rd season involved with Essex after previously spending the last 10 years with the Royal Air Force and the Army where he served as both a Physical Training and Instructor and Remedial Instructor. His role is manager of the Sports Science and Medical Department who ensure all professional and academy players are in peak physical and mental condition to compete at First Class County or potentially international cricket. Aside from this, his role as Head of Strength and Conditioning means overseeing all player fitness and recovery programmes and ensuring all players’ nutritional needs are met.
Ant graduated from the University of Surrey (Roehampton) in 2000 and whilst in the military completed a Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Essex.
Other than cricket, Ant has worked with various rugby squads and also within athletics and bobsleigh. He is an Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach with both the UKSCA and the NSCA.
Name: Richie Marsden
Role: Lead Physiotherapist
This is Richie’s first season at Essex after moving over from his native country of New Zealand to take on the Lead Physiotherapist role at the club. He has left his position with the state side Canterbury Wizards and the New Zealand A’s, but has also toured overseas as the Black Caps physiotherapist during their tour of Bangladesh in 2008.
Richie studied at the University of Otago during both his Bachelor of Physiotherapy, and more recently a Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Medicine. He has a personal sporting pedigree having played representative cricket back in New Zealand, and also representing his country in Aussie Rules Football.
Name: Dr Simon Schulz
Role: Club Doctor
Dr Schultz is a local GP who qualified in London in 1981. He has worked in Chelmsford since 1985 and for the past 20 years has had close links with the club. He regularly visits on match days to sort any general medical queries and liaises on behalf of the club with local specialists and consultants.
Name: Dr Clive Reeves
Role: Performance Coach
Dr Reeves is now in his 3rd season with Essex as performance Coach after previously working closely with Bolton Wanderers Football Club. Clive is a British Association of Sport and Exercise Science Accredited Sports Psychologist holding a PhD in Sports Psychology. He is part of a team at the Sporting Edge who provide sport psychology support and performance coaching to a number of high profile sports teams and individuals.
Name: Amanda Hartman
Role: Sports Massage Therapist
Amanda has been Sports Massage Therapist with the club for 7 years. She has her own business as well as providing support to both Essex and Brentwood Town FC. Amanda has a Diploma in Anatomy, Physiology and Massage and went on to complete an ITEC Sports Massage Diploma. Prior to working with Essex she worked in London at a Health Clinic in Old Street and also in various other professional clinics in London and in Essex alongside Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Physiotherapists.
Name: Andy Britton
Role: 2nd XI Physiotherapist
Andy has been a 2nd XI physiotherapist since 2008 after previously working with Thurrock Rugby Club. He graduated from the University of Brighton in 2004 with a Bachelor’s degree with honours in Physiotherapy . He currently works for the South London Healthcare Trust as a Senior Physiotherapist in Outpatient as well as the Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood.
