Promising young batsman who joined the Essex Academy as a 14-year-old in 2003 and has since worked his way into the first-team squad. Got his first taste of senior cricket in the one-day tourist match against Sri Lanka at Chelmsford in June 2006.
Despite struggling to make the runs in the 2nd XI that his talent dictated that season he did show good signs with the ball as an off-spin bowler. Westley went to the World Cricket Academy in Mumbai as part of a five-strong Academy contingent in February 2007 having visited Perth the previous December for three weeks on a Graham Gooch Scholarship.
Westley was handed his first-class debut in May 2007 against Cambridge University Centre of Cricketing Excellence at Fenner’s, going on to make four Championship appearances that year. The Cambridge-born youngster also made his England Under-19 Test debut in August 2007 when his seven wickets in the match helped his side to victory. Westley went on to feature for the junior England side in the World Cup in Malaysia in February and March 2008 in a busy winter that also saw him play in Australia and Sri Lanka.
