The South African born all-rounder signed for Essex from Derbyshire at the end of last season and is expected to be an influential part of the first team squad in all varieties of the game. He joined Derbyshire in 2004 having earlier been a member of South Africa's squad at the Under-19 World Cup two years earlier and eventually became an established member of the Derbyshire first team squad as a potent middle to lower order batsman who could also bowl more than useful seam and off-spin.

In August 2010, he took over the captaincy for the final two months of the season when Chris Rogers stepped down although Luke Sutton returned from Lancashire to lead the side in 2011.

Greg scored 726 Championship runs in 2011 and took 26 wickets but after failing to agree terms for an extended contract beyond the year, he chose a move to Essex to continue his career.
