May 2018 POTM Header

Vote for your May DeVines Player of the Month with four contenders nominated for the award. The month of May saw two Championship games played, with a win and a loss recorded. The One-Day Cup then took priority, with six group stage games played.

Varun Chopra May POTM

Opener Varun Chopra has been in blistering form in this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup, and currently sits second in the overall run scoring charts across the whole country. Chopra has hit 455 runs in just 6 innings, including a high score of 160 against Somerset. He is averaging exactly 89, and is the pivotal reason that Essex are still in contention for the knockout stages.

Adam Wheater May POTM

Adam Wheater returned to the side at the top of the order for the start of the Royal London One-Day Cup, and has made a considerable impact with partner Chopra.

The diminutive right-hander has often got the Eagles off to a fast start, and has contributed scores of 41 off 40 balls against Gloucestershire, 70 off 69 balls against Hampshire, and 88 off 99 in the recent victory against Glamorgan.

Wheater has also been tidy with the gloves, taking a number of catches behind the stumps.

Ravi Bopara May MOTM

Bopara has been the definition of consistency in the Royal London One-Day Cup so far this season. He has taken 10 wickets with the ball across 6 games, and sits level in third on the wicket-taking charts.

But it is with the bat where Ravi has really shone. The right-hander has scored 50 plus in each of his last 4 innings in May, and is currently averaging 64. He has scored a cumulative total of 254 runs across the competition, which includes a high score of 74.

Peter Siddle May POTM

Peter Siddle made quite the impression during his brief spell with the Club in the opening weeks of the season. The Australian International had a massive impact both on and off the field in April and May, and was widely regarded as one of the best overall overseas players to appear for the Club.

The Victorian bowled excellently against Lancashire for little reward, but it was the games against Yorkshire and Worcestershire where Siddle really shone. He took 8 wickets in the match against the White Rose, and took 7 to help Anthony McGrath’s side to a crucial victory over the Pears in early May. He also contributed valuable runs down the order, in lightning fashion.

Voting closes at 5pm on Friday 22 June and the winner will be announced on the opening day of the County Championship match against Somerset on 25 June.
