Off-spinning all-rounder Simon Harmer joined the club in October 2016 on a one-year contract as a ‘Kolpak’ player. Harmer is available for all competitions and signed a two-year extension after just one month with the Club.

Harmer represented South Africa in five Test matches taking 20 wickets at an average of 29.4. The 27-year-old plays his domestic cricket for the Warriors and has made 79 first-class, 49 List A and 41 T20 appearances for his franchise. The Pretoria-born cricketer made his international debut in 2015 and toured Bangladesh and India that year as one of three spinners.

In his debut Essex season, Harmer showed his credentials as he clinched 72 wickets in the County Championship, including two ten-wicket hauls, and was a pivotal cog in helping Essex claim the County Championship title.
